Why Paper Food Trays Remain Popular for Takeaway Food

2026 06/17

Despite the growing variety of takeaway packaging available today, paper food trays continue to be a popular choice for serving fried chicken, French fries, and a wide range of snack foods.

One reason is practicality. Unlike fully enclosed containers, paper boat trays allow food to remain visible and easily accessible. For fast-moving takeaway operations, this improves both product presentation and customer convenience.

Paper trays are also well suited to hot foods such as fries and fried chicken. Because they are not completely sealed, excess steam can escape more easily, helping to reduce moisture buildup that may affect texture and crispness.

Cost is another important factor. Compared with many rigid plastic containers, paper food trays are often a more economical solution while still providing sufficient strength for lightweight takeaway foods. This makes them particularly attractive for foodservice operators looking to balance performance and packaging costs.

Different foods require different packaging solutions. For burgers, rice meals, or foods with sauces, enclosed containers often provide better protection during transport. For fries, fried chicken, and snack foods, however, paper food trays offer a practical balance between visibility, airflow, and convenience.

From a merchandising perspective, open-top trays help showcase the food itself. Whether it's golden fries, crispy chicken, or street-food snacks, visibility can enhance perceived freshness and encourage impulse purchases.

While plastic packaging remains suitable for certain applications, it may not always be the ideal choice for foods that benefit from airflow and visual presentation. Rather than replacing every packaging format, paper food trays continue to succeed because they serve specific takeaway applications exceptionally well.

As takeaway food continues to evolve, paper food trays remain a proven packaging solution—not because they are the newest option, but because they continue to perform where it matters most.
